Dr. Matthias Giesel is a specialist in anesthesiology and heads the pain clinic (section head) at Marienkrankenhaus Soest, part of the Christliches Klinikum Soest. He is also medical director of the practice for pain therapy, palliative medicine and anesthesia at the Hospitalverbund MVZ Soest.

His career includes positions as senior physician and medical director at various hospitals, including St. Vinzenz Krankenhaus Altena and Marienhospital Herne.

He holds additional qualifications in mountain and alpine medicine, diving and hyperbaric medicine and tropical medicine, as well as further training in intensive care, manual medicine/chirotherapy, emergency medicine, palliative medicine, specialized pain therapy and sports medicine.

Since 2016 he has worked as a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry, including on medicinal cannabis. He studied medicine at the universities of Marburg (1999–2004) and Göttingen (2004–2005).

As an expert in the 420Pharma Circle of Experts, he presented in 2026 on the evidence base for cannabis and new perspectives in fibromyalgia.
